LO6 - Essay

  * ‘The content of digital media products makes people commit acts of violence.’ Discuss the statement based on digital media products you have studied. Use contemporary examples and theoretical ideas to support your answer. [20] Overall I believe that in some respect that media companies have some lenience over people's violent actions however I do believe that since people have full consciousness over their actions that it is down to them as individuals and how they have been taught right from wrong at a young age. One reason I am against this statement is due to media regulations, in which I will be discussing age ratings on certain media products and how they restrict audiences. In terms of games, PEGI rate games based upon violence, gore, language and more, through this they can make it so only specific age groups are legally allowed access to these products, from this restriction audiences that shouldn't be allowed to view the content in certain games cannot view them so...

LO6 Essay

Overall, I believe that the media effects debate is not an outdated concept as even though it may not affect us in the same way that it once did, it still does have an effect on audiences. This is because society has changed and therefore preferences and trends have changed within audiences. FOR it is an outdated concept as audiences do not view media products due to being controlled by media companies, instead they do it for their own personal reasons, this links to the uses and gratifications theory. This theory states that audiences view media products for the following reasons: escapism, surveillance, building a personal relationship and building a personal identity. This shows that in a sense the media cant control how audiences view the products and its no longer to simply view them, in many cases audiences build relationships with characters in many films, shows or games or they use it in a way to immerse themselves in the media, this portrays how the audience adapts itself to...

media effects - refers to the influence of media exposure on people, and these effects can be positive or negative media regulation -  passive audience theory -   hypodermic syringe - whoever owned/ controlled media industries will use the media to control the working class/ persuade them, trying to replace basic need with aspirations so it makes people need their non essential items advertising does work makes people seem like they are easy to persuade and control - believe everything they see  videogames -  movie - tv shows -  cultivation theory- from repetitive viewing of violent images, the audience becomes immune to the representations, this is called desensitisation the more we see that the world is bad, the more we believe it  1996 - criminal hearts was rated r and is now a 15 moral panic theory -  an instance of mass media concern , a group or product is perceived as a danger and threat to society (demonised) , something things demonised b...
